Thank you to everyone who joined the 2020 and 2021 Leukemia Ball Virtual Celebrations! Our Executive Committee was hard at work in the final weeks leading up to the 2020 Leukemia Ball when the curve-ball of all curve-balls came our way in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic. They stood by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, continued to lead with grace, humor and a relentless dedication to the mission. Even the global pandemic and all the ups and downs of the last 1.5 years couldn’t change the spirit of the Leukemia Ball.

Business leaders and philanthropists across the Washington, DC area stepped out to support the LLS mission, and through their generosity, we raised over $2.8 million to advance the LLS mission through the 2020 and 2021 Leukemia Ball events. In 2021, we enjoyed headline musical entertainment by Damien Escobar and Sheryl Crow!

Through the ever-changing circumstances of the last 1.5 years, we were reminded of the patients and families whose lives were put on hold long-before the pandemic – patients who heard the words “you have cancer”. Family, friends, and neighbors were adjusting to a whole new way of life during treatment AND a pandemic, and LLS was relentless to provide urgent support.

The LLS COVID-19 Patient Financial Aid Program launched on April 1, 2022, less than three weeks after the national emergency was declared. The program provided $250 to eligible blood cancer patients experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic and helped offset non-medical expenses such as food and other household expenses, rent and transportation. LLS is proud to share that more than 19,000 patients were assisted across the US from April – June 2020, through $3.9M in support.
